Meeting date: 8 April 2000
The pattern of lunches to come
We have now established our pattern of lunches at the Bat and Ball – one in early April to celebrate the start of the English season and one in October to mark its end.
The lunch was preceded by Grace, led by our Chaplain the Reverend David Brown. The full text was as follows:
“Loving Father – We ask your blessing on our gathering today and as the present-day custodians of the Hambledon Club may we be true to the memory of its founders, for whose vision and example we give grateful thanks.”
As with the previous two lunches, we can thank Dick Orders again for providing us with an excellent meal.
The Menu
Leek & Potato Soup with croutons; Poached Salmon with herbs & red pesto; Braised leg of lamb cooked with tomatoes and herbs, served on the bone; English cheeseboard; Coffee & mints
The Meeting
We have now established our pattern of lunches at the Bat and Ball – one in early April to celebrate the start of the English season and one in October to mark its end.
Among the members who attended this lunch, we were especially pleased to welcome Edward and Timothy Pardoe who – as mentioned in the last newsletter – are direct descendants of Edward Whalley-Tooker and through him two members of the great eighteenth-century side.
Ray and Anne Cooke sent their apologies but we hope they will attend the next meeting. Ray is an executive committee member of Hampshire County Cricket Club and we have learned that Anne is a direct descendant of John Small. With Marion and Bob Beagley in attendance, this will bring our number of direct descendants of the great club to seven.
After lunch, the business part of the day was conducted briefly and efficiently by your president. Afterward, he was able to announce that the members were so delighted with the management of the club that the four committee members had been elected for a further twelve months. The full list is

We received apologies from the following members: Alan Edwards, Stephen Green, Keith Hayhurst, Chris Turner, and John Young.
There were no proposals for new posthumous members and we agreed to maintain the subscription level at Three Guineas for the 204th Year.
Ashley reaffirmed our central purpose to “Honour the memory and great achievements of the Hambledon Club of 1750-1796.”
