Phil Mead scored more runs for Hampshire than any other man has ever scored for any other single first-class team. In 1921 he made the highest score for England against Australia in England, which stood until Hutton in 1938. In addition, he took hundreds of first-class wickets and slip catches, yet he played in very few Test matches – especially at home. He was the finest of Hampshire’s first group of great professionals who transformed the county club in the early years of the twentieth century and he continued playing for the next thirty years. This is his story, told in great detail and with great affection by Neil Jenkinson.
