One of the reasons that the achievements of the 18th-century Hambledon cricketers are still recognised today is that John Nyren recounted their stories for publication in 1832. Nyren was a player himself and his father Richard was one of the central figures in those distant days. There have been a number of previously published versions of Nyren’s tale but during his research for The Glory Years, Ashley Mote came across the original manuscript. As a consequence, he was able to publish this in its entirety for the first time – with a full commentary.
