Obituary

Roy Clarke – deceased

Died 8th June 2017

Funeral service: 1pm on Monday, 3 July at St Peter’s Church, Portishead (2pm, the Internment), followed by the Wake at the home of Mrs Clarke – details to be found in the Order of Service on the day.

Roy died on 8th June, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He was an honorary member of the Hambledon Luncheon Club, and enjoyed playing, watching and reading about cricket since his school days at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School. He was the author of the book, ‘James Aylward – The Untold Story’.

Roy was always a very enthusiastic member of our club. He travelled across from the west country, stayed overnight and often made contributions during lunches with intriguing information about the history of cricket and, in particular, of the original 18th century Hambledon Club. If you were present at the lunch when he explained in some amusing detail the origins and meanings of the Toast (including Madge!) you will have fond memories of his knowledge, enthusiasm and good humour. He was always the best of company at any cricket occasion, and will be sadly missed. (Roy’s last attendance at Hambledon was in the Spring of 2016).
