Winner of the Cricket Society’s 1997 Book of the Year.

This is a full account of the great events that took place on Broadhalfpenny Down in the 18th Century. The story is carried forward from those ‘Glory days’ of huge attendances and heavy betting to a time when the ground lay in utter neglect – and then forward to its revival. The myth of Broadhalfpenny Down as the ‘birthplace’ of cricket persists but this modern account corrects that with a detailed account of what really took place.

Available from most internet booksellers (eg, Amazon, Abe Books)

At the April 2013 luncheon, Ashley Mote (who sadly passed on the 30 March 2020) spoke of the re-publication of his book as an e-Book for Kindle and other e-Book readers. This will enable illustrated talks about how cricket evolved to the game as it is known today, will be available to schools (say 13-year-olds and upwards), cricket clubs and societies.

An eBook of John Nyren’s ‘Cricketers of My Time’ could also be available should the above re-publication be successful. It too will be a new edition expanded with a contribution from Roy Clarke based on his own book, ‘James Aylward: The Untold Story’. Roy’s insightful research was a vital addition to the understanding of John Nryen’s masterpiece – and both Roy and Ashley agree that the two books now belong together.
