The book has two main themes. The first is that from the time Dave first watched county cricket in 1959, it has been subjected to constant changes, with more looming. The book traces the history of those changes, which followed a long period of stability, but perhaps also some stagnation.
The second theme is that while cricket occupied a prominent role in English culture until the mid-twentieth century, it has since then become a more specialised, niche activity, enjoyed by some, but ignored by too many.
He explores this idea through examples from cinema, literature, photography, popular music and even political speeches, while suggesting that English cricket needs to find its way back into the mainstream – particularly in inner cities and among certain social groups for whom it appears to have little relevance.
